Quite a few studies show that individuals can significantly enhance the health of their colon simply by changing their eating habits!

In a recent publication by the North Shore Sun a report was citedfrom the World Cancer Research Fund. According to the report, there is for sure ”convincing evidence” that regular consumption of fiber-rich foods combined with a limitation of intake of red and processed meats can likely help preserve the health of your colon.

Basically, fiber consumption facilitates a healthy function of cells lining the colon, plus it also promotes the elimination of toxins from food and the environment and support a healthy bacteria balance in the intestines.

Contrary, excessive red meat consumption may lead to adverse changes in cellular health and potentially increase inflammation. Foods that contain high amounts of fiber include e.g. whole grains, beans, vegetables and fruits.

The World Cancer Research Fund e.g. recommends that people aim to consume less than 18 ounces (oz) of red meat per week.

Marriage increases the odds of surviving colon cancer! This is what a combined study from BYU and Penn State released June 21 suggests. The study program shows that married couples have a higher chance (up to 14 percent) to survive cancer. The results are based on cases of more than 125,000 colon patients.

Colon cancer is known as the fourth most common cancer inflicting males and females. In 2010 colon cancer claimed more than 51,000 lives in the USA, according figures presented by the American Cancer Society.

Researchers have found in the study that married men and women who were being diagnosed and seeking treatment in earlier stages of colon cancer, resulting to a higher survival rate.

Sven Wilson (a professor at BYU’s College of Family, Home and Social Sciences) who is a member of the research team, says:

“Our health is affected by our behaviors, socioeconomic status, work patterns and other relationships, marriage touches on all of those things.”

Though the authors of the publication, including Wilson, have acknowledged that there is a need for additional research to determine the cause of the survival benefits; the authors see the higher probability of survival as indicative of married couples receiving more aggressive treatments.

Interestingly, married cancer patients also tend to take greater risks to get cured – including: major surgery, when undergoing treatment. According discussions among the researchers, the risky decisions could be the result of being involved in the commitment associated with marriage:

“Because having a committed life partner gives patients more to live for.”

The new study also suggests that married men & women are more likely to get screened. Wilson believes this is related to encouragement from a spouse:

“You have an informal part-time health care provider living with you, encouraging you to take your medicine and see a doctor.”

Unlike earlier studies, the amount of data involved in the research is considerably larger than others. In the past, studies on correlations between cancer and marriage weren’t usually not able to show the stages of cancer + the factor concerning when patients were receiving treatment.

Dr. Randall Burt, a gastroenterologist, professor of medicine and director of prevention and outreach at the Hunstman Cancer Institute, likes the study as well, but he also adds an eager for more research on this subject:

“There seems to be little question that external support helps people through the whole cancer maze, but I think it really creates the question: What is causing the better survival among the married?”

Though the Huntsman Cancer Institute hasn’t done a study, Burt claims to have observed this trend.

However, Burt debated whether marriage itself is the cause or if it’s just an accompanying feature of people with higher incomes. Because better health knowledge and access to excellent medical care could partly explain the result. Therefore he recommends the need for future studies are necessary for clarity.

Researchers are just in the beginning stage of solve the puzzle of the real reasons why marriage conquers cancer, but this new study is a fascinating step ahead in understanding this environmental factor involved in the development of colon cancer.

The benefits of high colonic therapy are being discovered by more and more people, including celebrities and stars – some of them have even started promoting this alternative colon therapy. As a result, the term ‘high colonics‘ is mentioned more and more whenever colon cleansing is discussed!

There are various methods by which a colon cleanse can be done, and high colonic therapy is just one of them. A high colonic can be defined as follows:

“High colonic therapy is an alternative medical practice where large amounts of warm water are injected toward the upper reaches of the colon for cleansing purposes. Other common synonyms used to describe this alternative therapy method are colon hydrotherapy and colonic irrigation.”

Having a colonic irrigation basically implicates that your colon is flushed clean of solidified fecal matter that got stuck to the colon walls – including: waste, toxins & parasites. During a colonic irrigation the colon gets rids of a lot of unwanted waste – usually within a few hours. People who undergo this kind of alternative colon therapy typically start feeling healthier, lighter and fitter not long after the side effects of the therapy wear off.

While various types of colon therapy perform the same job—that of cleaning the colon, the main difference lies in the method by which this job is preformed. When you use regular colonics for colon cleansing, then one generally takes a herbal- or a natural colonic for certain a number of days in order to cleanse your colon. This period could range from: week(s) to months.

A colonic irrigation concerns a procedure where a jet of water is inserted into the colon via the rectum; and the whole colon is physically washed for hours with warm streams of water. This colon procedure takes 2 to 4 hours, and provides instant results in the form of a clean and sparkling colon.

A regular colonic therapy procedure can take weeks to get your colon to this stage. In fact, most experts say that a colonic irrigation is much more effective in cleaning the colon and many colon experts advise that you alternate between getting a high colonic and regular colonics in order to have a clean healthy colon.

What is a high colonic? Compared to a regular colonic therapy, which usually involves oral consumption of laxatives and colonics, a high colonic is an invasive procedure, which is the main reason why many people avoid getting it done. Because a colonic irrigation procedure requires the use of sophisticated technology and a lot of disposable equipment, they are much costlier than regular colonics. However, since these therapies also provide significantly better results, the costs are much more than makes up for the high that you experience after the procedure.

While a colonic irrigation usually results in good health if done properly, it can also induce an infection or complication (which could even result in a high chance of colon cancer). But only when it is not carried out by professionals. Therefore, always make sure that the therapist carrying out the procedure on you is certified to do so! Another thing that you will need to be ensured of is the following: all materials that go inside your body is pre-sterilized and disposable. Keep these precautions in mind when you undergo the procedure, because this will ensure that your colon is restored to perfect health in a safe and risk free manner.

Are you interested? Or what is your thought?

NOTICE: People who suffer on regular constipation may consider undergoing a colon irrigation or colon cleansing therapy session. However, it is advised always to first seek medical advice, because the colon procedure can damage the colon and even lead to other issues.

Dr. Sang W. Lee of the department of surgery at New York–Presbyterian Hospital and Cornell University, New York, has suggested that combined endolaparoscopic surgery (CELS) is a safe and effective alternative for bowel resection!

Dr. Lee and his colleagues looked at the records of 66 patients who were taken to the operating room for CELS at New York–Presbyterian. The patients had been referred after failure to clear polyps, mostly because the colonic polyps were large or in difficult locations based on biopsy or endoscopic photographs. Only those patients with at least a year of follow-up including a colonoscopy were included, and those with successful colonoscopic polypectomies were excluded.

The surgeons used CO2 colonoscopy to avoid bowel distention.

“The idea is that if you have a difficult polyp, or a polyp that is located at difficult location, or a very large polyp, then you can laparoscopically help get exposure of that polyp so you can take it out endoscopically,” said Dr. Lee at the annual meeting of the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons. “And if you [damage] the bowel wall, you can recognize and repair it laparoscopically.”

In 2007 Dr. Edward F. Group published a book about the various sources of toxins in your diet, home and workplace - which could results in sickness, disease and stress!

Dr. Group has studied natural healing methods for over 20 years.

Dr. Group dedicates several chapters in his book to reducing intestinal toxins from food, beverages and environmental toxins. He focuses on how an unhealthy colon leads to constipation, IBS, Diverticular disease, and many other gastrointestinal disorders. Dr. Group also covers how to prevent and reverse these disorders through natural healing methods.

Via Google-books you can take a look at a preview of significant part of the book!

Three years ago Beyonce told Oprah that she started on using the Master Cleanse Diet in order to help her shed a bit of weight. Is this really a smart way to lose weight?

The Master Cleanse is a liquid diet - the purpose is to cleanse and detoxify the body while reportedly stimulating healthy tissue growth. The Master Cleanse Program includes e.g.: drinking salt water in the morning, a concoction of lemon juice, cayenne and maple syrup throughout the day, and at the end of the day shopping off with laxative tea at night. It may be a diet and an effective method to lose weight. But another more important question is: Are detox diets healthy?

Katherine McManus, director of nutrition at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston recently did a study comparing a variety of weight loss & detox diets.

Katherine McManus (registered dietitian) says

"I have not seen any science that substantiates the health claims made by proponents of detox diets. These detox cleansing diets are a very limited, short-term fix, and the research shows that the weight loss cannot be sustained."

Eating whole grains is definitely healthy for your body. But what exactly is a whole grain? And what foods are in the category 'whole grains'? And what are the health benefits for the colon, and beyond?

Question: What is a whole grain?

There are 3 parts of the whole grain:

• 1 - The BRAN - which is full of fiber, B vitamins, and 50 to 80 percent of the grain’s minerals.
• 2 - The large ENDOSPERM - contains complex carbohydrates, protein, and small amount of B vitamins.
• 3 - The GERM - which is full of B vitamins, vitamin E, trace minerals, unsaturated fats, phytochemicals, and antioxidants

Question: What foods are in the category 'whole grains'?

Whole grain foods include breads, pastas, and cereals that are made with 100% whole grain and not with white processed flours.

Question: What are the health benefits of whole grains?

The major health benefits for the colon are: reduces the risk for constipation, reduces the rise in glucose and insulin, reduces the risk for bowel disorders, and provides protection against colon cancer, rectum cancer & stomach cancer.

Other major health benefits of whole grains beyond the colon are a lower risk for: heart disease, high cholesterol, high blood pressure and stroke.

What is the best method for losing weight? Researchers have found evidence indicating that obesity is featured with a body’s metabolism that does not function properly. So, likely the best method for losing weight is to focuss on: a healthy lifestyle combined with detoxification procedure.

4 Options for body detoxification are:

• 1 - Fasting:

Some people believe that giving up food for a period of time allows the body to clear out toxins. But it's controversial method. And you should be aware that fasting may harm your body, especially if you have certain medical conditions. So talk to your doctor before trying any type of calorie restriction.

• 2 - Colonics, or colon hydrotherapy:

This method uses an infusion of water under pressure to removes waste from the colon. While many people say the practice makes them feel better, most doctors say there is no need for a colonic outside of cases of severe pathological constipation or if you choose to use it as a colonoscopy preparation. Be aware of the risks: there is no licensing for colonic hydrotherapy, and there are various 'alternative' techniques being used. So if you decide to try it: ask questions and go see the equipment and facility to make sure everything is clean!!

• 3 - Infrared sauna:

This is a newer form of the traditional steam sauna. This method warms the body using radiant heat. Proponents say it is a more comfortable experience than steam-heat saunas. Both make you sweat, which is good for moving toxins out of the body.

• 4 - Ionic foot baths and detoxing foot pads:

These products claim to remove toxins through the feet, either by running an electric current from electrodes through water or by herbs in a pad that emit "far infrared radiation." Save your money. The feet play no role in detoxification, doctors say, and the effects you see can be explained by simple chemistry.
